One From The Heart

After completing Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola initially planned for his next picture to be an intimate romantic musical shot on a low budget in Las Vegas. Three years later, One from the Heart had mushroomed into a big-budget spectacular, shot on strikingly stylized sets at his newly opened Zoetrope Studio and costing a then-massive $27 million. The entire old Las Vegas Strip was built to scale and for perspective. A stunning visual achievement.

The story concerns Hank (Frederick Forrest) and Franny (Terri Garr), a working-class couple living on the outskirts of Las Vegas. After five years together, their relationship has fallen into a rut, and they both set off in search of new partners. Hank meets up with Leila (Nastassia Kinski), a beautiful high-wire artist, and Franny has a fling with Ray (Raul Julia), a dashing actor-waiter. But Hank and Franny still love each other, and their search for romance brings them back into each other’s arms. Singer/songwriter Tom Waits received an Oscar nomination for his widely acclaimed song score, performed romantically and hauntingly with country crooner Crystal Gayle.

I’ve always had a romantic side, and of course all of us romantics out there have our national day coming up St.Valentines! So that got me thinking what should we be getting the loved ones in our lives this Friday February the 14th?

How about flowers? Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon to be exact. Who doesn’t like getting roses on Valentines Day? The single barrel range from Four Roses are extensive. Jim Rutledge the Master Distiller uses 10 different recipes which vary in mash bill and yeast strain. At the extremely reasonable price of just $43.99 a bottle this is great news meaning you could buy that someone special roses once a month for the rest of 2014!

Valentines Day can also be a passionate affair and nothing can be as evocative as a Flaming Heart. This is a stunning Blended Malt Scotch Whisky from the Compass Box Whisky Co. A perfect blend of whiskies including new french oak aging which contributes spice and a smouldering smokiness and a big percentage of The Clynelish Single Malt at it’s heart adding fruit character. Flaming Heart is now on it’s fourth edition and is as rich and concentrated as it has ever been. This should retail at around the $100 – $120 mark and is bound to create a spark!

Or of course you all could play it safe and find yourselves a great bottle of vintage Champagne. One of my current personal favorites is the Andre Clouet 2004 Vintage Andre Clouet is based in the incredibly well named village of Bouzy! This is a great bottle for $60. Its toasty, linear, has awesome depth with traditional notes of ripe apricot a touch of green apple sharpness it’s delicious.

Happy Valentines Day my fellow TranscendentalDrammer’s

About Author

I moved here from UK in February 2011 leaving my job as a community bobby in Surrey. By the end of May that year I had joined the team at Astor Wines & Spirits turning my love of Whisky & Wine into work. My first whisky love is single malt, which started as a 18 year old when my local Pub landlord introduced me to Macallan 12. I am also extremely passionate about American whiskey which is an amazing category. I love travel and have white water rafted in New Zealand, Argentina & Canada.
